Primary text

The first group reads Al-Fatiha (the opening chapter) alone in every unit of prayer after separating from the Imam, as this is considered the end of their prayer, given that the Imam recited a Surah with Al-Fatiha in the first two units. The apparent position of the Madhhab is that what the second group makes up is the beginning of their prayer. Consequently, the first group should begin recitation, seek refuge (Ta'awwudh), and recite Al-Fatiha and a Surah upon separation from the Imam.

Supporting text

It has been narrated that the recitation should be for the end of their prayer, which implies they should not seek refuge, not say Ta'awwudh, and not recite an additional Surah. In any case, they should make it brief. If they recite a Surah, it should be one of the shortest ones, or they may recite one or two verses from a Surah.
