Primary text

Rising fully upright and attaining stillness after rising from bowing is obligatory. This is the position held by Al-Shafi'i. The basis for this obligation is the command given by the Prophet, peace be upon him, to the one who prayed badly, and his consistent practice, which falls under the general command: 'Pray as you have seen me praying.'

Abu Hanifah and some followers of Malik hold that it is not obligatory because Allah did not explicitly command it, having only commanded bowing, prostration, and standing. They argue that if it were obligatory, it would necessitate an obligatory remembrance, similar to the initial standing. This argument is refuted by noting that Allah commanded standing, and this is a form of standing, and the Prophet's command must be obeyed. Furthermore, their claim that it does not involve an obligatory remembrance is invalid, as bowing and prostration are essential pillars (arkan) without obligatory remembrance according to their own view.
