Primary text

Rising from prostration, sitting upright, and pausing between the two prostrations is obligatory. This view is held by Al-Shafi'i. This is evidenced by the Prophet's command to the one who prayed poorly: 'Then sit until you are settled in your sitting.' The Prophet, peace be upon him, also habitually performed this action, and it is narrated that he never omitted it. Aisha reported that when he raised from prostration, he would not prostrate again until he was sitting upright. Since raising from the second prostration is obligatory, the resulting upright sitting must also be obligatory, similar to rising from the final prostration.

Malik and Abu Hanifa hold that this sitting is not obligatory. According to Abu Hanifa, it suffices if the head is raised to the height of a sword's tip, based on the reasoning that this is a sitting separating two similar actions and is therefore not obligatory, like the sitting of the first Tashahhud.
