Primary text
The foremost row for men in congregational prayer is the best, and the furthest row is the worst. This is established by the statement of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him: "The best rows of men are the first of them, and the worst of them are the last of them." This is narrated by Muslim and Abu Dawud. Furthermore, the first row is likened to the row of angels, and if its virtue were known, people would hasten to it, as narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad based on the narration of Ubayy ibn Ka'b. The command is also given to complete the first rows before the subsequent ones, with any deficiency being placed in the last row, as stated by Anas.
