The Witr prayer should be established after prior preparation. If one intends to perform Witr after the obligatory Isha prayer followed by optional prayers and eating, it is favored that two rak'ahs are performed before the Witr rak'ah.
Supporting text
If one prays Tahajjud during the night and then sleeps without performing Witr, it is preferred that they perform two rak'ahs before establishing the single Witr rak'ah.
