Primary text

A congenital disbeliever is not required to make up any acts of worship they neglected while in their state of disbelief, and there is no known disagreement on this matter. Evidence is provided by the Quranic verse stating that if they cease disbelief, what preceded shall be forgiven (Quran 21:38). Furthermore, requiring makeup worship after conversion would act as a deterrent from accepting Islam, thus it is excused.

There is a difference of scholarly opinion regarding whether a disbeliever is addressed with the subsidiary branches of Islam (*furu' al-Islam*) while they are still in a state of disbelief, although there is consensus that they are not required to make up those acts after converting. Two narrations concerning this issue are attributed to Ahmad.
