What is the consequence of proceeding when required to return, but only realizing the omission after beginning the next part of the prayer?

If one proceeds in a place where returning was obligatory, the rak'ah (unit of prayer) from which the obligatory element was omitted is invalidated, similar to realizing the omission only after beginning the recitation (Qira'ah) of the next part.
