The correct determination is based on the distance where one can walk towards the passerby and ward them off without invalidating the prayer, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, commanded warding off those who pass in front. Therefore, the ruling is restricted to that proximity where walking towards the passerby would not invalidate the prayer. This interpretation reconciles the general statements in the traditions through consensus and the need to restrict the ambiguous scope.
