Primary text

There is a report from Anas stating that when one prays seated cross-legged and enters *ruku'* (bowing), the leg is bent. This is the view held by ath-Thawri. However, the sounder view, according to careful consideration, is that the legs should not be bent except specifically in *sujud* (prostration). In *ruku'*, the position of the legs should resemble that of a person standing, as the posture in bowing should align with the posture of standing, which is less subject to infirmity. This aligns with the Prophet's appearance in the standing part of prayer.

Supporting text

Ibn al-Mundhir narrated from Ahmad and Ishaq that the legs should only be bent during prostration, and in bowing, one should maintain the posture associated with standing. This is the opinion attributed to Abu Yusuf and Muhammad, which is deemed more consistent analogically (*aqyas*).
