Primary text

The final time for the Dhuhr prayer is established when the shadow resulting from the sun's zenith increases by an amount equal to the length of a person's shadow at the moment of *zawwal* (meridian passage), resulting in a total shadow length equal to the length of the person themselves (one's own height). This transition marks the end of Dhuhr and the beginning of Asr time. This view is held by Malik, Al-Thawri, Al-Shafi'i, Al-Awza'i, Abu Yusuf, Muhammad, Abu Thawr, and Dawud.

Supporting text

Ata stated that the Dhuhr prayer time does not end until the sun begins to take on a yellowish hue. Tawus held that the time for both Dhuhr and Asr extends until nightfall. A narration from Malik suggests the preferred time ends when every object's shadow equals its own height, but the time for valid performance extends until a duration remains within which Asr can be performed, based on the Prophet's combining of prayers while resident.
