Primary text

It is recommended that the follower begins the physical actions of prayer, such as rising and lowering, only after the Imam has completed them. This is the view held by the majority of scholars. The evidence supporting this is the narration from Al-Bara, stating that the Prophet, peace be upon him, would not rise from bowing until the follower saw him place his forehead on the ground, after which the follower would follow. Furthermore, the statement that the Imam is appointed to be followed dictates that actions should occur after the Imam's action. The use of 'fa' (then) in commands like 'when he bows, then bow' implies sequence, meaning the follower's bowing occurs after the Imam's.

Supporting text

Malik held the view that the follower's actions should coincide with the Imam's actions.
