Primary text

The follower must perform the prostration of forgetfulness if the Imam misses it. This view is held by Ibn Sirin, Al-Hakam, Hammad, Qatadah, Malik, Al-Layth, Ash-Shafi'i, and Abu Thawr. The reasoning is that the follower's prayer is deficient due to the Imam's forgetfulness, and since the Imam did not rectify it by performing the prostration, the obligation falls upon the follower to correct the deficiency.

Supporting text

The opposing view is that the follower does not perform the prostration. This is narrated from 'Ata, Al-Hasan, An-Nakha'i, Al-Qasim, Hammad bin Abi Sulayman, Ath-Thawri, and the Ashab ar-Ra'y (followers of the school of opinion). Their basis is that the follower's prostration is entirely contingent upon the Imam's action; if the Imam fails to perform it, the prerequisite for the follower's prostration is not established.
