Primary text

The followers should not stand if the Iqamah is called while the Imam is outside the mosque or if they do not know his proximity. This is based on the explicit command of the Prophet (peace be upon him): 'When the prayer is established, do not stand until you see me' (Muttafaqun 'Alayh), as demonstrated when 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) found people standing and questioned them for staring blankly ('samidin').

Supporting text

Ahmad, in one narration, favored the narration of Abu Hurayrah indicating that the ranks were formed before the Prophet (PBUH) took his position, suggesting the formation of ranks should precede the Imam's entry if he is expected.
