Does forgetting the prostrations of forgetfulness (Sujud as-Sahw) invalidate the prayer if a long time passes?
Chapter on the Two Prostrations of Forgetfulness
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The prayer is not invalidated if one forgets the prostrations of forgetfulness (Sujud as-Sahw) even after a long interval. This is the position held by Al-Shafi'i and the companions of Al-Ra'y (the Hanafi school). The evidence for this is that the Sujud as-Sahw is a repair (*jabir*) for the worship following it; therefore, its omission does not invalidate the prayer, similar to the compensatory acts required in Hajj. Furthermore, the Sujud as-Sahw is legislated to be performed outside the prayer structure, so its omission does not corrupt the prayer, analogous to the omission of the Adhan.

A differing opinion exists, attributed to Ahmad, stating that if the person leaves the mosque, they must repeat the prayer. This view is also held by Al-Hakam, Ibn Shubrumah, and is the reported position of Malik and Abu Thawr concerning the prostration that occurs before the final Taslim (salam).
