Is ignorance of the obligation to perform actions in sequence an excuse for omitting the sequence (tartib)?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The omission of obligatory sequence (tartib) in prayer is not excused by ignorance of its obligation. This ruling is supported by the principle that sequence is obligatory in prayer and thus is not waived by ignorance, similar to sequence requirements in combining prayers (jam'ayn) or the sequence of bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujud). Furthermore, ignorance of religious rulings, when one has the ability to learn, does not negate the application of those rulings, analogous to ignorance concerning the prohibition of eating during fasting.
Supporting text
Zufar holds that ignorance regarding the obligation of sequence is a valid excuse for its omission.
