The meaning of 'yutaghanna bi al-Quran' is disputed among the early generations. Ibn Uyaynah, Abu Ubaid, and a group hold that it means to be self-sufficient with the Quran (istaghni bi al-Quran). Others interpret it as perfecting one's recitation, raising the voice, and chanting rhythmically, as exemplified by Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari's desire to beautify his recitation for the Prophet (peace be upon him). Al-Shafi'i stated it means raising the voice in recitation. Abu Abdullah (Ahmad) related it to reciting with a heartfelt sorrow matching the emotion of the recitation, similar to Abu Musa’s style.
