What is the intention behind delaying Dhuhr and Maghrib on a cloudy day according to one interpretation of Imam Ahmad's view?
Chapter on Prayer Times
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is probable that Imam Ahmad intended the delay of Dhuhr and Maghrib on cloudy days solely to ensure the time has definitively entered, thereby avoiding prayer performed while in doubt. Abu Talib related statements indicating this, specifying that Dhuhr should be delayed until certainty of its entry is achieved, and Maghrib should be delayed until certainty of the arrival of complete night darkness is achieved, while Asr and Isha should be hastened.
