Is the intention (niyyah) required for the concluding Tasleem (salutation) to exit the prayer?

Primary text

The prayer is not invalidated if the worshipper does not intend exiting the prayer through the Tasleem. This is the correct position, as the initial intention for the prayer encompasses the entire act, including the concluding salutation, which is considered part of it. If intention were required for the exit, the specific formulation would need to be designated, similar to the opening Takbir. Furthermore, intention is not obligatory for exiting an act of worship, unlike for entering it. The comparison between the beginning and the end of the prayer is invalid because intention at the start governs the subsequent parts, which is not the case for the conclusion.

Supporting text

Ibn Hamid asserts that the prayer is invalidated if the intention to exit is omitted. This view aligns with the explicit statement of Al-Shafi'i, considering the Tasleem as one of the two boundaries of the prayer where intention is necessary, analogous to the opening Takbir.
