Where should the *Iqamah* (call to stand for prayer) be performed?
Chapter on Adhan
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is recommended that the one reciting the *Iqamah* remains in the place where he delivered the *Adhan* (call to prayer). Imam Ahmad favored this practice. The basis for this preference includes the narration concerning Bilal, implying that if the *Mu'adhin* (caller) were praying far from the *Iqamah* location, he might fear being surpassed in saying "Amin" (if the *Iqamah* was being recited simultaneously or immediately before the prayer). Furthermore, the *Iqamah* is established for notification, thus it should be delivered from the location that maximizes this notification. Evidence for this is found in the narration of Abdullah ibn Umar, stating that upon hearing the *Iqamah*, they would perform *Wudu* (ablution) and then proceed to the prayer.
Supporting text
If the *Adhan* is called from a minaret or a location far from the main mosque structure, the *Mu'adhin* may deliver the *Iqamah* from a different location, provided it is closer to the place of prayer, in order to avoid missing part of the congregational prayer.
