Is it obligatory to follow the Adhan recited by Bilal (based on 'Abdullah ibn Zayd's vision) over the Adhan of Abu Mahdhurah?
Chapter on Adhan
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The Adhan of 'Abdullah ibn Zayd (Bilal's Adhan) should be followed because Bilal recited it consistently with the Prophet (peace be upon him) both while traveling and residing, and the Prophet affirmed Bilal's recitation even after the recitation of Abu Mahdhurah was known. Furthermore, the narration of 'Abdullah ibn Zayd provides the full description of the Iqamah alongside the Adhan, making it more complete.

The issue is one of permissible difference of opinion. The precedence of Bilal's Adhan is upheld because the Prophet ratified it consistently. The instruction to Abu Mahdhurah regarding reciting the Shahadatayn quietly is interpreted as a specific means to achieve sincerity for him, as he was a recent convert mocking the call, and this was not commanded to those with established faith like Bilal.
