Primary text

It is not obligatory to cover with mud. The apparent position according to Ahmad is that it is not required because the mud dries and scatters during bowing and prostration, involves severe hardship, and is not customary practice. Ibn Aqil chose that it is obligatory because it covers the body, and whatever scatters is disregarded, with the remaining covering being sufficient. However, the preferred view is that it is not obligatory due to the hardship it causes, the potential harm inflicted, and the inability to achieve complete covering.

Supporting text

Ibn Aqil holds that covering with mud is obligatory because what remains after scattering suffices as covering.
