Is it permissible to add 'wa bihamdihi' (and with His praise) to the Tasbeeh in bowing and prostration?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is permissible to say, 'Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem wa bihamdihi' in bowing. Imam Ahmad stated that both forms (with and without the addition) have been transmitted, and he did not reject either form. This is supported by a narration of Hudhayfah indicating the Prophet—peace be upon him—used this addition in both bowing and prostration. This addition is to be accepted when transmitted.

Imam Ahmad himself stated that he does not say 'wa bihamdihi.' This view—omitting the addition—is attributed to Al-Shafi'i and the Ashab al-Ra'y by Ibn al-Mundhir. The justification for this omission is that the narration without the addition is more famous and numerous. Furthermore, Abu Dawud expressed concern that the narration containing the addition might not be well-preserved, and it is suggested that this addition might stem from the narration of Ibn Abi Layla, whom Imam Ahmad might have considered weak.
