Primary text

Combining the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, and the Maghrib and Isha prayers, is permissible due to illness. This is the view held by 'Ata and Malik. The basis for this ruling is the practice of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who combined prayers without fear or rain, and in another narration, without fear or travel. These narrations are established by Muslim. Since there is consensus that combining prayers is not allowed without an excuse, the established excuse is illness. Furthermore, it is established that the Prophet commanded Sahlah bint Suhayl and Hamnah bint Jahsh, who were experiencing *Istihada* (abnormal, non-menstrual bleeding), to delay Dhuhr and hasten Asr, joining them with a single washing, thereby permitting combination due to this condition.

The companions of al-Ra'y (Hanafi school) and Al-Shafi'i rule that combining prayers is not permissible solely due to illness, because the established narrations regarding fixed prayer times are firm and should not be abandoned for a potential reason.
