Is it permissible to combine two Surahs in the obligatory (Fard) prayer?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is recommended to limit recitation to one Surah following Al-Fatihah in obligatory prayers, as this was the practice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) during most of his prayers, and he commanded Mu'adh to do so. Concerning combining two Surahs in one Rak'ah for obligatory prayer, there are two views. One view states that it is disliked. The second view states that it is not disliked, because the narration from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud is absolute regarding prayer and may include the obligatory prayer. Al-Khall narrated via his chain from Ibn Umar that he used to recite two Surahs in one Rak'ah during the obligatory prayer.
Supporting text
The view permitting the combination is supported by the general nature of the narration of Ibn Mas'ud, which can encompass the obligatory prayer. Furthermore, Ibn Umar is reported to have recited two Surahs in one Rak'ah during the obligatory prayer.
