Is it permissible to follow the call to prayer issued by a trustworthy scholar who knows the correct time?
Chapter on Prayer Times

Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is permissible to follow the call to prayer (Adhan) given by a trustworthy and knowledgeable scholar regarding the time. This is because the assumption is that the Adhan is not called until the prescribed time has entered, thus equating the Adhan to the scholar's testimony. The Prophet, peace be upon him, stated, "The Mu'adhdhin (caller to prayer) is a trustee" (Reported by Abu Dawud). If his call were not to be relied upon, he would not hold the status of a trustee. Furthermore, it is reported that he said, "Two matters are hanging around the necks of the Mu'adhdhins for the Muslims: their prayers and their fasting" (Reported by Ibn Majah). Since the Adhan is legislated to announce the time, if following the Mu'adhdhin were not permitted, the wisdom behind its legislation would be lost. People continuously gather in mosques at prayer times and proceed to pray upon hearing the Adhan without personal inquiry into the time or observation, which indicates consensus.
