The Imam is prohibited from performing voluntary prayers in the exact place where he led the obligatory prayer. Ahmad explicitly stated this ruling, affirming that Ali ibn Abi Talib held the same view. Furthermore, it is permissible for one who prayed behind the Imam to perform voluntary prayers in that same spot, as Ibn Umar performed such an act. Ishaq agreed with this position. Abu Bakr narrated the tradition of Ali and also narrated, with the same chain of transmission, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "The Imam shall not perform voluntary prayer in his standing place where he prays with the people."
