Primary text

Performing the prostration of recitation after Fajr until sunrise and after Asr until sunset is prohibited. Ahmad and Abu Thawr hold this view, as do Ibn Umar and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib and Ishaq. The basis for this is the general prohibition: 'There is no prayer after Fajr until the sun rises, and no prayer after Asr until the sun sets.' Evidence supporting this is the report that Ibn Umar refrained from performing prostration after Asr three times after being warned, stating that he had prayed behind the Prophet, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they did not prostrate until the sun rose. Another report indicates Ibn Umar warned a reciter against prostrating after Asr, stating, 'They do not comprehend it.'

Supporting text

There is another narration from Ahmad that permits prostration during these prohibited times, supported by Al-Shafi'i, Al-Hasan, Al-Sha'bi, Salim, Al-Qasim, Ata, and Al-Zuhri. The companions of the opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y) permitted it before the sun's color changed.
