Is it permissible to recite the same Surah in consecutive Rak'ahs (units of prayer)?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is permissible for a person to recite the same Surah in one Rak'ah and then recite it again in the following Rak'ah. This practice is supported by the action of the Prophet, peace be upon him. It is narrated via Al-Najjad, with his chain of narration tracing back to Abu Al-Huwayrith, that the Prophet prayed Maghrib, reciting Al-Fatiha (Umm Al-Kitab) and accompanying it with Surah Al-Zalzalah. Then, in the second Rak'ah, he recited Umm Al-Qur'an and also repeated Surah Al-Zalzalah. Furthermore, it is established that a man used to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas in every Rak'ah, and when this was reported to the Prophet, peace be upon him, he confirmed his action. This narration is found in Sahih Al-Bukhari.
