Is it permissible to use an animal as a barrier (Sutrah) during prayer?
Chapter on Imamate and Congregational Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
It is permissible to use a camel or any animal as a barrier during prayer. This practice is supported by the actions of Ibn Umar and Anas. The evidence for this ruling is the report from Ibn Umar that the Prophet, peace be upon him, prayed facing a camel. Furthermore, it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah would position his riding animal and pray towards it, or if the animal moved, he would position the saddle and pray towards its rear end. Additionally, using a human being as a barrier is permissible because the human stands in the place of other forms of barriers.
Supporting text
It is reported from Al-Shafi'i that it is not permissible to use a riding animal as a barrier during prayer.
