It is recommended to perform the Maghrib prayer promptly when its time enters, except in cases of valid excuse. This is the established position of the scholars, including the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and those who followed them. Evidence for this is found in the narration of Jabir, where the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed it immediately when it became obligatory. Furthermore, Rafi' bin Khadij reported that they would pray Maghrib with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and one of them could see where his arrows landed upon finishing, indicating the swift completion of the prayer near sunset. This action, along with the repetition of the timing by Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) on two occasions at the same time, confirms the strong recommendation for its immediate observance.
