Primary text

It is recommended to stand for prayer when the caller says, 'Qad qamat is-salah' (Prayer is established). This view is held by Malik and the people of the two Holy Sanctuaries (Makkah and Madinah). Standing at this point is because the statement functions as a command requiring immediate compliance to fulfill its purpose of gathering the congregation. One should not begin the Takbir until the caller has finished the Iqamah, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) was observed to straighten the ranks and instruct the companions to align themselves only after the Iqamah was finished. Evidence includes the narration from Anas that the Prophet (PBUH) turned to the companions after the prayer was established and said, 'Straighten your ranks and stand close, for I see you from behind my back' (Narrated by Al-Bukhari), and another narration where he directed his right and left to align and straighten themselves.

Shafi'i holds that one stands when the caller finishes the entire Iqamah. 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, Muhammad ibn Ka'b, Salih, Abu Qilabah, Az-Zuhri, and 'Ata' stood at the very beginning (badwah) of the Iqamah. Abu Hanifah holds that one stands when the caller says 'Hayya 'ala as-salah' and then performs the Takbir when 'Qad qamat is-salah' is said. The companions of 'Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud), including Suwayd ibn Ghaflah and An-Nakha'i, also said the Takbir when the caller said 'Qad qamat is-salah,' using as evidence Bilal's statement, 'Do not precede me with Amin,' implying the Takbir occurred before the end of the Iqamah.
