It is recommended that the person performing the Tahajjud prayer recite a portion of the Quran during it because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to do so. The performer has the choice between reciting aloud (Jahra) or secretly (Sirran). However, if reciting aloud encourages better recitation or if there is someone present who can listen and benefit from the recitation, then reciting aloud is superior. The practice of the Prophet involved both modes of recitation, as reported by Aisha, who stated that he sometimes recited quietly and sometimes recited aloud. Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet's recitation was sometimes raised and sometimes lowered, and Ibn Abbas mentioned it was done to an extent that those in the dwelling could hear him while he was inside.
