Primary text

It is recommended for the worshipper to approach his sutrah closely. This is based on the statement transmitted from Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah, where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you prays facing a sutrah, let him draw near to it, lest Satan interrupt his prayer." This is narrated by Abu Dawud. Similarly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded: "When one of you prays, let him pray towards a sutrah and draw near to it," narrated by al-Athram. Further supporting this, it is narrated from Sahl ibn Sa'd that "There was space for a sheep to pass between the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Qibla," narrated by al-Bukhari. Standing close is considered more protective of the prayer and prevents anything from passing between the worshipper and the sutrah.

Supporting text

Imam Malik ibn Anas was observed praying far from his sutrah, and upon being instructed by a man to approach it, he moved forward while reciting Quran 4:113, indicating a known legal point regarding closeness.
