How should naked individuals arrange themselves during congregational prayer?

Chapter on the Description of Prayer

Al-Mughni

Book of Prayer

Book 3 · Issue 3 · Bab 5

Open in Qurani

Primary text

If they establish the congregation, they must pray in a single line, and their Imam must stand in their middle to ensure better concealment and modesty (lowering the gaze) from them. Similarly, it is legislated for the Imam of women to stand in their middle in all situations because they are subject to covering requirements. If naked women are present with men, they must move away from the men to prevent mutual viewing. The women should also pray in congregation, though their congregation is less emphasized than that of the men.

Supporting text

If everyone is in one space or a confined area, the men pray first, then the women stand behind them with their backs to the men; subsequently, the women pray, and the men stand behind them, so that no one sees the private parts of the others. If the men cannot form a single line, the women form ranks and lower their gaze from those in front of them due to necessity.
