Primary text

Recitation is not obligatory upon the follower, neither for what the Imam recites aloud nor for what he recites silently. This is the explicit position of Imam Ahmad, narrated by the collective group, and is also the view of Al-Zuhri, Al-Thawri, Ibn Uyaynah, Malik, Abu Hanifah, and Ishaq. The fundamental evidence is the narration: If you have an Imam, the Imam's recitation is your recitation, which implies sufficiency. Furthermore, if recitation were obligatory for the follower, it would not be waived in the situation of following the Imam, unlike other essential parts of the prayer which are not waived.
