What is the order of performance when one delays a prayer due to sleep or other reasons and fears missing the time if they first perform the Sunnah of Fajr?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
If one wakes up before sunrise and fears that the sun will rise before they can complete the two rak'ahs of Fajr Sunnah, they must begin with the obligatory prayer (Fard) and delay the two rak'ahs of Sunnah. Ahmad affirmed this in the narration of a group including Abu al-Harith. Since prioritizing the current mandatory prayer over a missed one is required due to the necessity of observing the time for the current prayer, prioritizing the Fard over the Sunnah is more appropriate. Similarly, if one wakes up unsure whether the sun has risen or not, they must start with the Fard, as the presumption is that the time remains, allowing for the performance of the obligatory prayer.
