Chapter on Adhan

Primary text

The person who performed the Adhan (call to prayer) should also perform the Iqamah. This is the position held by Al-Shafi'i. The rationale is that both actions are acts performed by a male that precede the prayer, thus it is recommended that one person performs both, similar to the two sermons (Khutbatayn). Evidence for this is the Prophet's saying in the narration of Ziyad ibn al-Harith al-Suda'i: "The brother of Suday called the Adhan, and whoever calls the Adhan, he should call the Iqamah."

Abu Hanifah and Malik maintain that there is no distinction between the person calling the Adhan and any other person performing the Iqamah. Their evidence is the narration from Abu Dawud concerning 'Abdullah ibn Zayd, who saw the Adhan in a dream, informed the Prophet (peace be upon him), and was told to convey it to Bilal. After Bilal called the Adhan, 'Abdullah stated his desire to perform it, but the Prophet commanded him, "You perform the Iqamah." They argue this shows that the purpose is achieved even if different people perform the calls, making it permissible.
