Is the performance of Sujud as-Sahw required if one remembers the oversight after concluding the prayer?
Chapter on the Two Prostrations of Forgetfulness
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
If one remembers the oversight after finishing the prayer, one performs two prostrations of forgetfulness upon remembering, recites the Tashahhud, and the prayer is valid. This opinion is held by 'Alqamah, Al-Hasan, 'Ata', Az-Zuhri, An-Nakha'i, Malik, Al-Layth, Ash-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and Abu Thawr. The legal basis is the action of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who performed Sujud as-Sahw after the salutation and speaking in the narration of Ibn Mas'ud.
Supporting text
Abu Hanifah states that if one speaks after the prayer, the requirement for Sujud as-Sahw is waived because the speech contradicts the nature of the prayer, similar to one who invalidates their ablution. Al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin maintained that if one turns their face away from the Qibla, they should not resume or prostrate.
