Primary text

Performing two Rak'ahs after Witr prayer is not recommended, although it is permissible for a person to do so. The apparent view of Ahmad is that it is permissible, provided it is done while sitting down, as the narration suggests. The correct view is that these two Rak'ahs are not considered established Sunnah because the majority of narrations describing the Prophet's night vigil (Tahajjud) do not mention them. Most Companions and later scholars refrained from them. The permissibility is supported by narrations from Aisha stating the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed nine Rak'ahs at night, then concluded with one Taslim, and afterwards prayed two Rak'ahs while seated, making a total of eleven. Another narration from Aisha describes thirteen Rak'ahs, which included praying two Rak'ahs while seated after Witr.

Supporting text

Abu al-Hasan al-Amidi counted them among the confirmed regular Sunan (Ratibat). Some scholars, such as Abu Salamah, reported from Aisha that the Prophet prayed thirteen Rak'ahs, which included praying two Rak'ahs while seated after Witr.
