Primary text

The residual effect after using stones (Istijmar) for cleansing, following thorough cleaning and completion of the required number of wipes, is pardoned in the location of Istinja. This ruling has no known internal dispute (Khilaf). Scholars supporting the view that the location becomes pure include Abu Abdullah ibn Hamid and Abu Hafs ibn al-Muslimah, which aligns with the apparent position of Ahmad. The evidence for pardon lies in the Prophet’s statement concerning dung and bone fragments indicating they do not purify, which implies that other substances are purified by analogy, as Istijmar is an action that removes the ruling of impurity, similar to water.

The later scholars among our companions hold that the location does not become pure, but remains impure. Consequently, if one who used Istijmar sits in a small amount of water, it becomes impure, and any sweat from him would also be impure because wiping does not remove all parts of the impurity; the remainder constitutes the essence of impurity.
