Primary text

The owner of a house has the priority to lead the prayer in his house over anyone else, even if another person present is more learned or has greater jurisprudence, provided the owner is capable of leading them. This practice was upheld by Ibn Mas'ud, Abu Dharr, and Hudhayfah, and is the view of 'Ata' and Al-Shafi'i. The fundamental evidence is the Prophet's saying: 'A man should not lead prayer in his house, nor in his domain of authority (*sultan*), nor sit on his honored seat except with his permission.' Furthermore, the visitor should not lead the hosts, according to the Prophet's instruction recorded by Malik ibn al-Huwayrith.
