Primary text

The most virtuous time for performing the Witr prayer is the last part of the night. This is supported by the Prophet's statement: "Whoever fears that he will not stand in the last part of the night, let him perform Witr at its beginning, and whoever hopes to stand in the last part of the night, let him perform Witr at the end of the night, for the prayer of the last part of the night is witnessed." Furthermore, the Prophet stated, "Witr is one rak'ah from the last part of the night." The Prophet himself used to perform Witr late at night, and Aisha reported that the Prophet's Witr concluded around dawn (Sahar).
