What is the prescribed manner for the call to prayer (Adhan) and Iqamah when combining two prayers in the time of the second prayer?
Chapter on Adhan
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
When combining two prayers in the time of the second prayer, the Adhan is not emphasized for either prayer because the first prayer is performed outside its proper time, and the second prayer is preceded by another prayer. This situation is analogous to missed prayers (Fawit). The evidence for this is the narration of Ibn Umar that the Prophet, peace be upon him, combined Maghrib and Isha at Muzdalifah, performing each with a single Iqamah, as narrated by Al-Bukhari. Since the first prayer is out of its time, it resembles a missed prayer, and the second prayer is preceded by another, precluding the legislation of an Adhan for it, similar to the second of two missed prayers.

Imam Malik holds that the Adhan must be called for both the first and the second prayer, arguing that the second prayer is taking place within its legislated time, thus requiring an Adhan like the first. However, this opinion contradicts the sound narration transmitted in the Muwatta, which Imam Malik himself transmitted while subsequently adopting a different view.
