What is the prescribed manner for performing Sujud as-Sahw, specifically regarding Takbir, Tashahhud, and Tasleem?
Chapter on the Two Prostrations of Forgetfulness
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
Whenever one performs Sujud as-Sahw, one must say the Takbir (Allahu Akbar) for descending into prostration and for rising from it, whether the prostrations occur before the final salutation or after. If the prostrations are before the final salutation, one gives the salutation immediately afterward. If the prostrations occur after the salutation, one must recite the Tashahhud and then give the salutation, regardless of whether the required place for the prostrations was after the salutation, or if it was meant to be before the salutation but was forgotten until after the salutation. This is the position of Ibn Mas'ud, An-Nakha'i, Qatadah, Al-Hakam, Hammad, Ath-Thawri, Al-Awza'i, Ash-Shafi'i, and the companions of Ra'y (Ahl ar-Ra'y). The evidence for the Takbir includes the Hadith of Ibn Buhaynah where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said the Takbir in every rising and lowering. The evidence for the Tasleem is found in the Hadith of 'Imran ibn Husayn and Ibn Mas'ud, both mentioning that the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave the salutation after the two prostrations. The evidence for the Tashahhud includes the narration of Abu Dawud in the Hadith of 'Imran ibn Husayn where the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the prostrations, then recited the Tashahhud, then gave the salutation, because prostration necessitating a salutation necessitates a Tashahhud, like the prostrations within the main prayer structure.

Anas, Al-Hasan, and 'Ata' maintain that there is neither Tashahhud nor Tasleem with the prostrations. Ibn Sirin and Ibn Al-Mundhir hold that there is a Tasleem without a Tashahhud. Ibn Al-Mundhir affirms the Tasleem through multiple narrations but doubts the necessity of the Tashahhud. 'Ata' allowed the option to either perform Tashahhud and Tasleem or to omit both. It is also argued against the necessity of Tashahhud because the apparent meaning of the two stronger narrations for Tasleem indicates the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave the salutation without a Tashahhud, and because it is an isolated prostration, a Tashahhud is not obligatory upon it, similar to the prostration of recitation (Sujud at-Tilawah).
