What is the prescribed manner of rising from the first intermediate sitting?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
When rising from the first intermediate sitting, the person stands on the balls of their feet, leaning on their knees, similar to the rising from prostration in the first Rak'ah. They should not advance one foot before the other when rising. This manner is stated by Ibn Abbas.
Supporting text
Ishaq disliked advancing one foot. A narration from Ibn Abbas indicates that advancing a foot might invalidate the prayer. Mujahid and Ishaq permitted it for an elderly person (*Shaykh*). The preferred view is that advancing the foot is disliked because it was not narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Ibn Abbas disliked it, and the elderly person can rely on their hands to stand up without it. It does not invalidate the prayer because it is not considered excessive action (*Amal Kathir*).
