What is the prescribed manner of sitting (*Julus*) for the intermediate Tashahhud?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The manner of sitting for this *Tashahhud* is the same as the sitting between the two prostrations, which is sitting with the left foot spread out (*Muftirishan*). This applies whether it is the final sitting of the prayer or not. This position is supported by Al-Thawri, Ishaq, and the Companions of Opinion (*Ashab Ar-Ra'y*). The evidence is the hadith of Abu Humaid, stating that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat for the *Tashahhud*, spreading his left foot and turning the chest of his right foot towards the Qibla, and the hadith of Wa'il ibn Hujr which similarly describes spreading the left foot. These two authentic hadiths must be followed and prioritized over the narration supporting the alternative method due to their authenticity and greater number of narrators. Furthermore, Abu Humaid narrated his hadith in the presence of ten Companions who affirmed it, and these narrations are later than that of Ibn Mas'ud, meaning the later instruction supersedes the earlier one. Abu Humaid also differentiated between the two *Tashahhuds*, making the difference an obligatory addition.
Supporting text
Malik holds that the sitting should be *Mutawarrikan* (sitting on the left hip) in all cases, based on the narration of Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat *Mutawarrikan* in the middle and the end of the prayer. Al-Shafi'i differentiates: if it is an intermediate sitting, it is *Iftirash* (as stated above); if it is the final sitting, it is *Tawarruk* (as stated by Malik).
