What is the prescribed manner (Sunnah) for sitting between the two prostrations?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The Sunnah for sitting between the two prostrations is to adopt the posture of Iftirash. This entails bending the left foot, spreading it out, and sitting upon it, while keeping the right foot erect, with the toes resting on the ground and pointing towards the Qibla. Abu Hamid described the Prophet's prayer, stating he bent his left foot and sat upon it, then sat upright until every bone was in its place before going down into prostration. Aisha narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to spread his left foot and keep his right foot erect.

It is recommended that the toes of the right foot are pointed towards the Qibla, meaning they are bent in that direction. Narrations indicate that companions would check their feet, making sure the toes of the right foot faced the Qibla. Ibn Umar stated that it is part of the Sunnah to keep the right foot erect and direct its toes towards the Qibla. It is reported that Ibn Umar would orient everything towards the Qibla when praying, even his sandals.
