What is the prescribed method for responding to a greeting while performing prayer?
Chapter on the Two Prostrations of Forgetfulness
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
The prescribed method for responding to a greeting while performing prayer is by signaling (Ishaarah). This is the position held by Malik, Ash-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and Abu Thawr. Evidence for this is found in the narration of Suhayb, who stated that when he greeted the Prophet (peace be upon him) while praying, the Prophet replied with a signal. The narration regarding Ibn 'Abbas indicates that he replied to a greeting by grasping the forearm of the greeter. Another narration details that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would reply by extending his hand, placing the palm downwards and the back of the hand upwards.
Supporting text
It is permissible to reply to the greeting with speech after completing the prayer. This is narrated from Abu Dharr, 'Ata', An-Nakha'i, and Dawud, based on the report where the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied to Ibn Mas'ud after finishing the prayer, stating that Allah had newly ordained that no speaking should occur during prayer.
