Primary text

The prescribed wording is as mentioned, derived from the Hadith of Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah, which is considered the most authentic narration regarding this matter. The wording includes: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Abraham; indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Abraham; indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.' On any of the variations transmitted in the authentic reports, the prayer is valid, similar to the ruling on the Tashahhud wording.

The apparent position of Ahmad (based on a narration from Abu Zur'ah Ad-Dimashqi) suggests that sending blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH) himself is obligatory, based on the narration from Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah, while mentioning the family (*Aal*) might not be strictly required. This view is also attributed to Al-Shafi'i. There are two views within our Madhhab regarding the obligation of sending blessings upon the family.
