What is the procedure when a worshipper begins the prayer for a current time (Hadhirah) but remembers having a missed obligatory prayer (Fa'itah) while the time frame remains ample?
Chapter on the Description of Prayer
Al-Mughni
Book of Prayer
Primary text
If the time for the current prayer is ample, the worshipper must complete the current prayer, make up the missed prayer afterward, and then repeat the prayer they were currently performing (whether leading, following, or praying alone). This is the apparent position of Al-Khiraqi and Abu Bakr, and the view of Ibn Umar, Malik, Al-Lays, and Ishaq regarding the follower (Ma'mum). This is also narrated from Ahmad regarding the follower. This sequence is mandated because the missed prayer is an obligatory duty that must be performed subsequently, establishing the validity of the current prayer only after both the makeup and repetition are performed.

There are divergent narrations from Ahmad concerning the person praying alone, with one position suggesting he should terminate the prayer and make up the missed one first. Another view, held by Ta'us, Al-Hasan, Al-Shafi'i, and Abu Thawr, is that he completes the current prayer and only makes up the missed one, arguing repetition is not required based on the verse {And do not invalidate your deeds} (Quran 33:33) and interpretations of the Hadith of Ibn Umar. A consensus is noted that if one is praying behind an Imam, they must continue with the Imam and repeat both prayers later. However, it is permissible to continue the prayer without repeating it, as the current prayer then becomes voluntary (Nafl), making the following of the Imam no longer strictly necessary.
